For those of you who are familiar with the R. Hiscott name you will know it is synonymous with Theatrical & Beauty Supplies in Toronto. Started by Tom and Ruth Hiscott around the 1940’s, the business expanded it’s repertoire of wigs and beauty supplies into professional make-up for the television and film industry.
“Today Hiscott carries several product lines including, Ben Nye, Kryolan, DermaColor, T. LeClerc, the exclusive for Visiora, the list goes on, hence the industry nickname ‘the candy store’.”
The history of the stores current owner, Joyce Laviest, goes back to 1983 when she was given the opportunity to join the company. Today Joyce uses her expertise to help professionals and students alike with their make-up purchases. This is in addition managing all of the different areas of the store the store.
“As Joyce puts it, “I learned from the master” (Ruth). When Joyce developed a knack for selling and working with professional make-up Ruth sent her to train with Jack Medhurst (in the mid 80’s) and eventually sent her to Paris to train with the Visiora experts.”
With new products coming to the market all the time, plus the advances in technology, there is never a dull moment at Hiscott.
